Development of New Sustainable Inorganic Flame Retardant Additive System

In the quest for safer, environmentally friendly materials, scientists have made a significant leap by enhancing the flame resistance of polyamide 6,6, a widely used plastic in electronics and textiles, through the incorporation of phosphate glass. This innovative approach leverages the unique properties of phosphate glass to significantly reduce the risk of fire. Unlike traditional methods, which rely on potentially harmful chemicals, this phosphate glass not only blends seamlessly with the plastic but also aids in forming a protective barrier that drastically slows down the combustion process. The study showcases how varying the glass composition can tailor the material’s response to heat and flames, opening new avenues for creating products that are both safe and sustainable.
